DESCRIPTION

The SCA Barista Skills module provides students with the practical skills they need behind the espresso bar and is ideal for people looking to become professional baristas, open their own coffee shops, compete in barista competitions, or simply become home brewing stars.

CURRICULUM

  • How to analytically taste espresso
  • Dialing in, setting your grinder, and adjusting espresso parameters
  • Milk steaming and latte art techniques
  • Health and safety, customer service, and basic business practices

Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) certification classes consist of lecture, hands-on skill training, exam review, and some applicable exams.

Kaleena Teoh is a co-founder at Coffee Project NY, the Academy’s Director of Education and a certified AST (Authorized SCA Trainer) and oversees all Academy lesson plans and curricula. She has a background in psychology, speech pathology, and social work and is fluent in Chinese, Japanese, and American Sign Language.

Foundation-level classes are worth 5 points toward the 100-point SCA Coffee Skills Diploma requirement. Recommended follow-up classes are Intermediate level in the same module, or Foundation level in any other Coffee Skills Module. For more program details, see SCA Pathway Information.

Intermediate-level classes are worth 10 points toward the 100-point SCA Coffee Skills Diploma requirement. Recommended follow-up classes are Professional level in the same module, or Foundation level in any other Coffee Skills Module. For more program details, see SCA Pathway Information.

All SCA exam and certification fees are included in the cost for tickets. Exams and certification are optional for students who take class recreationally.
Currently, we do not offer discounted pricing for SCA Members.

Due to highly limited seating and the cost of producing each class, we kindly ask that if you need to change or cancel your reservation, please let us know as soon as possible. While we don’t offer refunds for classes, we will accommodate changes based on when you reach out to us and how much advance notice is given before the date of the reservation.

  • Over 4 weeks notice: free rescheduling or credit of equal value toward any class
  • Under 4 weeks notice: $50 rescheduling fee or credit of original value minus $50
  • Under 72 hours notice: 50% rescheduling fee or credit of 50% of original class value
  • Under 24 hours notice: no credit available

With the safety and health of our students and their communities in mind, Coffee Project NY requires proof of vaccination or documentation of a negative COVID-19 test within 48 hours of the day of our class.

For proof of vaccination, we accept (alongside photo ID):

  • CDC-issued Vaccination Cards
  • NYC Excelsior Pass
  • NYC Vaccination Record
  • NYC Covid Safe App with photos of your records
  • A government-issued record from outside the U.S.

The following are COVID Rapid Test sites near our Long Island City facility:

  • UMD Urgent Care LIC (5-35 50th Ave)
  • CityMD Long Island City (25-18 Queens Plaza S)
